How Native women are working to end the MMIW crisis: As of 2022, over 5,000 Indigenous women and girls have reportedly gone missing. And according to the U.S. Department of Justice, almost 300 Indigenous women are currently missing. Though these numbers are unsettling and difficult to keep track of, experts and community members say cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) are significantly undercounted and don't reflect the gravity of the issue. One woman’s journey to adopt her nephews: Ashley Boone is a licensed foster parent and child welfare specialist in Oklahoma. She is also an aunt fighting to adopt her nephews, ages five and six, who live hundreds of miles away in Minnesota. "We're fighting so hard for them," she says. Recently, a county judge ruled that a white family who isn’t kin would foster Boone's biracial nephews, highlighting the systemic bias and injustice within Minnesota's Kandiyohi County child welfare system. Tulsa Race Massacre survivor Hughes Van Ellis passes: Hughes Van Ellis, one of the last survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and WWII veteran, has passed away. He leaves behind his sister, Viola Ford Fletcher, another survivor of the massacre, and other family members. Along with Fletcher and Lessie Benningfield Randall, Ellis was a plaintiff in the reparations lawsuit against the city of Tulsa since 2020, which a federal judge dismissed this past July.
