All eyes on voters this Super Tuesday: Presidential nominees are on the ballot in 15 states across the country today. But what is the true significance of Super Tuesday? It’s “our dress rehearsal for the general election,” Kristin Powell, the deputy director of the Black Futures Lab, a voter mobilization organization, told Capital B News for this report on the election year milestone. Groups like Black Futures Lab and Black Voters Matter are leveraging the Democratic primary in particular, to get a sense of Black voter enthusiasm. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to secure their party nominations. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled against Colorado, which had contended that Trump was ineligible to appear on the ballot for its state primaries due to his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
'Nine Little Girls' and the fight for justice: For more than a decade, nine sisters battled the South Dakota legislature for the right to sue the Catholic Church for sexual abuses they endured during the 1950s and '60s at an Indian boarding school the church operated. State lawmakers have denied these women and hundreds of other Native survivors of sexual abuses the right to sue, and some have died without receiving justice. This special two-part Native News Online feature shines a light on the stories of these survivors, and the urgency of continuing their fight.
After prison outbreak, Haiti under state of emergency: A state of emergency remains in effect for Haiti, reports the Haitian Times, following unrest fueled by recent gang violence and the mass escape of nearly 3,600 inmates from the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince after armed individuals attacked the facility on March 2. A curfew forbidding anyone from being outdoors between the hours of 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. is also in effect until March 6. The measures have been put in place to address intense gang violence that has erupted in Haiti’s capital, driving widespread panic and alerts from foreign embassies–including the U.S. Embassy in Haiti–for their citizens to avoid the country. Some of the country’s most notorious criminals have escaped incarceration in the recent outbreaks. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ariel Henry is in Kenya on a multinational mission for support against gangs in Haiti.
