Shelter shuffle leaves hundreds of migrants waiting outside in below-freezing temperaturesAs New York continues to grapple with an overwhelming influx of migrants, it is also failing to meet the basic needs of new arrivals in below-freezing temperatures. Local news sources have reported migrants going without beds to sleep in, with many journeying to overcrowded shelters and moving between shelters while seeking more permanent housing. One migrant from Mauritania told Documented that he returned to St. Brigid's Catholic School in Manhattan's East Village — an intake site many single adult migrants go to once they hit their 30-day shelter limit after staying at city sites — and staff sent him to a center near JFK Airport, only to learn his name hadn't been registered.

On Monday night, he stayed in a church until he could return to St. Brigid. “You don’t sleep — you just sit on the chairs the whole night,” he said.

The report suggests recommendations for improving health outcomes, such as expanding the federal child tax credit and improving Medicaid access.
