Minn.’s Prairie Island Indian Community celebrates steps toward a green future

For years, the Prairie Island Indian Community in St. Paul, Minnesota has voiced its concern about the proximity of a nuclear waste storage facility near its reservation. Now, community leaders are seeing the almost-completed project — a 5.4-megawatt field of solar panels and a $7.5M boost in annual compensation from Xcel Energy — as a path toward "energy sovereignty." Lessons on supporting Latina teens with suicide prevention

Now in its 15th year, Comunilife, Inc. founder, president and CEO Rosa M. Gil spoke with Epicenter-NYC about her organization's award-winning initiative "Life is Precious," a suicide prevention program for Latina teens — a demographic that attempts suicide more often than any other youth group. So what's one way of building wealth and financial independence? Investing. "Because women identify as savers, not investors, they don’t take enough risk. And when you don’t take enough risk, you don’t have the opportunity to earn," says Nancy Tangler, the author of “The Women’s Guide to Successful Investing.”
